With several hard working volunteers, the Wheeler fire
was first started along the downwind side of the field. A long, low flame
front was lit along a mowed, fuel-less lane created for this purpose. This
downwind "backfire" slowly creeps against the wind, eventually creating a
wide and fuel-less "blackline." The mowed, fuel-less lane is about 8' wide
and is created to allow people to move into a safe area if the wind should
change during the field burn. I should also note that Mr. Blakeman
contacted the local authorities before the burn in case any passerby
reported a fire at the Wheeler property. |
