Milan, Ohio is a village of approximately 1450 people located in Erie County about 2 miles south of the Ohio Turnpike Exit 7 (number 118 - the Sandusky/Norwalk exchange). Milan was founded in 1816 as Merry's Mill, but the name was soon changed to Milan and by 1833 the population had grown enough for the town of Milan it to be incorporated by the State of Ohio. In 1839 the Milan Canal was opened which allowed shipping direct from Milan to Lake Erie and the town became known as a shipping port and an area that built schooners for the Great Lakes. Eventually the railroad replaced the canal as a more effective way of moving goods. Milan, Ohio's most famous person was the great inventor Thomas Edison who was born in 1847 and his birthplace and childhood home is a featured attraction for visitors to Milan. The unique charm of historic Milan, Ohio is shown in photos throughout this site including a visit to the Milan town square which was originally designed like a rural Connecticut town square. |
